| | SEPTEMBER 2021 6EDITOR'S DESKTaiwan is the heartbeat of the emerging startups' landscape today. On realizing the crucial role that startups play in fostering an innovative economy, Taiwan has channelized its resources to build a dynamic and robust startup ecosystem to support the growth of emerging enterprises. The Global Startup Ecosystem Index Report 2021, Taiwan ranks 26th, which precisely indicates the nation's prolific growth bringing home these new firms. Taiwan has access to a number of drivers accelerating the foundation of a strong startup landscape, one of which is the government's deep involvement in promoting these companies. The Taiwanese Government offers several financial incentives, including awards, grants, and loans to many SMEs and startups to run their businesses seamlessly. Again, government-backed initiatives like the Taiwan Tech Area (TTA), a tech innovation and entrepreneurship hub located in the Taipei area, robustly support the tech industries. Additionally, the parliament has also approved a new fintech regulatory sandbox law in 2017 that offers significant support to the fintech startups in avoiding some of the strict regulations that the established firms face. Another startling fact about Taiwan is its high literacy rates of 98.5 percent approximately with excellence in science, maths, and other technical subjects in the academic proformas that make it almost impossible to witness any dearth of skilled resources in the market. Infact, industrial giants like Google have long shown keenness in investing in Taiwan's tech talent. In 2013 Google opened a data center. Five years from then, they welcomed 2000 plus engineers in Taiwan to support its acquisition of the majority of HTC's smartphone design division for $1.1 billion. Along with this, Google also announced plans to hire more people and train 5000 students in AI. Currently, Google is looking forward to training more tech talent to advance some of their digital tools and hire trainees.Taiwan is seeing a constant growth spurt in its startup ecosystem. Despite a plethora of challenges in the past, the country is attracting many venture capital firms and global attention in recent years. With more government support and innovation-supportive laws, Taiwan is paving its way to becoming the most suitable destination in Asia for developing unique, innovative startups.
